About the author Stefan Schmidt, born 1963 in Sonthofen, Bavaria.
Married, 3 sons (1993, 1996, 2000).

Self-employed part-time software developer 1988-1992.
PhD in Physics at University of Munich 1994:
'Investigation of the photosynthetic charge separation in modified bacterial reaction centers by transient femtosecond absorption spectroscopy'.
IT consultant at Accenture from 1994 to 2007.
Head of IT Technology Management at a German Insurance Company since 2007.

First trip in own kayak in 1971.
Slalom kayaker 1974-1979.
German canoe instructor license in 1981.
German trainer license (Kanulehrer-B) for canoeing in 1986.
Member of the German canoe association (DKV) safety council 1982-1990.

Active folding-kayak & whitewater-kayaker.
